AI use
Which AI Termspring uses, what it sees, what it doesn’t do with your work, and how you control it. This page is part of the Terms.
VERSION 2026-10-24 · LAST UPDATED 24 OCTOBER 2026
What the AI does
Termspring’s AI features run only when you use them. Each one is listed in your AI-use log by these names:
- Slide reading: to read your lecture slides into summaries.
- Cards from slides: to suggest flashcards from your lecture slides.
- Sheet reading: to transcribe the pages of seminar sheets.
- Sheet split: to split seminar sheets into their questions.
- Checked answers: to draft worked answers to seminar questions, each checked separately.
- Practice twin: to write fresh-number versions of seminar questions to practise on.
- Photo marking: to suggest marks from photos of your working.
- Cards from notes: to suggest flashcards from your own notes.
- Module details: to read the module catalogue page into module details.
- Worksheet: to write practice worksheets from your notes.
- Worksheet question: to rewrite single worksheet questions.
- Lecture notes: to draft notes from your lecture transcripts.
- Recall check: to compare what you recalled after a lecture with its transcript.
- Lecture question: to answer your questions during a lecture.
- Add, sorted by AI: to work out what a line you typed into Add should become.
- Graph questions: to draft graph questions from your lecture slides.
- Case cards: to draft clinical case cards from your lecture slides.
- OSCE feedback: to give feedback on the items you missed in an OSCE practice station.
- Case study cards: to draft case study revision cards from your lecture slides.
- Essay plan critique: to point out gaps in the structure of your own essay plan (argument map), without writing it.
- IRAC plan feedback: to point out gaps in the structure of your own problem-question plan, without writing the answer.
- Results check: to point out reporting problems in a results paragraph you wrote, without rewriting it.
- Hint: to give one rung of help (a nudge, a hint or a worked step) on your own code or proof, the solution only when you asked.
Everything else, including the planner, writing notes, Memory reviews and Focus, works without AI.
Which models
The AI features use Claude, made by Anthropic, through Anthropic’s API.
- Free and Plus: Claude Haiku does most of the work.
- Max: Claude Sonnet writes the longer work: worksheets, lecture notes, recall checks and marking from photos. Haiku still does the quick jobs.
- On every plan, Sonnet does the few steps that need more care: splitting seminar sheets into questions, suggesting flashcards from your notes, re-reading slides that came out unclear, and checking a worked answer again when the first check can’t confirm it.
We move to newer versions of these models as Anthropic releases them.
What is sent, and what isn’t done with it
- When you use a feature, the material it needs (for example the slides you asked to be read) is sent to Anthropic with that request, as data, never as instructions. The AI can’t act on it or reach anything else in your account.
- No training on your work. Anthropic processes what we send as our sub-processor under its commercial terms, which don’t allow it to train its models on that data. We don’t use your content to train any AI model either.
- Anthropic processes requests in the United States. The privacy notice explains how data leaves the UK safely and how long it is kept.
- Your calendar links and passwords are never sent to the AI.
Work that can wait
Some jobs don’t need an answer straight away, such as lecture notes or flashcard suggestions. Termspring may send those through Anthropic’s Message Batches, which costs less and returns results within a day. Anthropic holds batch results until we collect them, for no more than 29 days. Once we have saved the results, we delete the batch from Anthropic.
Drafts, not verdicts
- Everything the AI writes is a draft for you to check. It can be wrong, including maths, worked answers and references to your slides.
- Worked answers are checked separately before you see them, and the check can still miss mistakes.
- Marking suggestions, including marking from a photo of your working, are suggestions to help you find your mistakes. They are never a mark or a grade, and they don’t predict what your university will award.
- Flashcards and module details the AI suggests are kept only once you approve them.
Your controls
These are free on every plan.
- Study without AI: one switch in Settings › AI turns every AI feature off.
- Each module’s AI level, set to match your university’s rules:
- No AI: The module doesn’t allow AI. Termspring runs no AI for anything in it.
- Assistive: AI may help you study, within the module’s rules. Acknowledge what you used.
- Integral: The module expects you to use AI, and to say how you used it.
- The AI-use log: every AI request you made, with its date, module and what it was for. Download it as a spreadsheet, and use the paragraph it prepares when your university asks you to acknowledge AI use.
Your university’s rules always come first. Termspring doesn’t write work for you to hand in (see section 5 of the Terms).
The monthly AI allowance
Each plan includes an amount of AI use each month, measured by what it costs us to run: a small taster on Free, £3.00 on Plus and £7.50 on Max. Some features also have their own monthly counts, such as 10 worksheets on Plus and 12 on Max. When the allowance is used up, AI features pause until the 1st of the next month, UK time, and tell you so. Everything else carries on. The subscription terms cover the plans and prices.
Connecting your own AI
On Plus and Max you can connect your own Claude or ChatGPT account to Termspring. What your assistant reads through that connection is sent to Anthropic or OpenAI under your own account with them, and their terms and settings apply, including whether they train on it. You can disconnect it at any time in Settings.
